Anne was also in a tense connection to Gilbert Blythe who was two years younger than Anne however he was studying at the same level having had his schooling interrupted when his father became ill. At their first encounter in school, Gilbert joked with Anne by calling her Carrots. Amybeth McNulty's Anne is a 13 year old girl that had an unhappy childhood, living in orphanages as well as strangers' homes. In the late 1890s Anne is sent away to live with aging sisters Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert who live on Prince Edward Island. The series is over, it is 1919 and they are content; Gilbert is 55 and is still deeply attracted to Anne from Green Gables.
